Physician assistants
Physician Assistants (PA) are academically prepared and highly skilled health care professionals who provide a broad range of medical services. PAs are physician extenders and not independent practitioners. This emerging profession in the Canadian Healthcare landscape works with a degree of autonomy negotiated and agreed on by the supervising physician(s) and the PA. A relationship with a supervising physician is essential to the role of the PA.
The PAs scope of practice is determined on an individual basis. This is formally outlined in a practice contract or agreement between the supervising physician(s) and the PA. Given this, a PA practicing in an occupational medicine role has the unique ability to provide a greater level of care; given that their scope can mirror that of their supervising physician. This level of care can range from primary and preventive health care, to comprehensive on site emergency capabilities.
PAs have been a mainstay within the Canadian Armed Forces for over 30 years, providing care in some of the most austere and hostile environments around the world. We are honored to have some of these individual working within our organization.
